Goal Planning – my version (this week)

When I start thinking about goals, at first I can be paralyzed. The fever of not achieving them, at first causes me to think and rethink again – finally coming up with some sense of what the final out come should be and the why.

Final outcome is easy… Running a full marathon – seems simple, right? Well, when planning for a race, the training plan can be the easy part! Piece of cake (oooh, I love cake)! Pick a race and then figure out the daily/weekly distances that need to be completed and when, super simple – WRONG! Now to account for the “what ifs” because we all know that they are going to happen.

I try to plan ahead for the wether, knowing that I can substitute a run for treadmill. I plan my nutrition, hydration, clothes to wear, sunscreen… even what snacks I bring for my pup, Zoe. But what I never seem to have planned (because some things are always unexpected) is illness or injury. I’m a glutton for punishment, it takes a lot for me to skip a run for injury – but I’m a big baby when I am sick. I don’t get sick very often, so when it happens – Ugggghhh!

Of course, I get sick a week before a long run (a planned race with friends) Now, I have not been well enough to do much but have been trying to keep moving around the house, worked yesterday and SURVIVED! So this week has been a side track to my goal, but, I am still going forward, still intend on completing my 13.1 miles with friends on Sunday.

I guess the point I am trying to make is: The path is never straight forward, sometimes you zig zag, some times you go up really dumb hills, over fences, through walls, get stuck in a round about, but as long as you are still aiming forward, toward that goal, you’ll get there. Just keep going.

See you at the finish line!
